Its popularity is due to the Malatesta family, who in 1450 decided that the carnival should be celebrated with a formal charter. One of the most important characteristics of the festival was the possibility, at least for one day, to loose the differences between the social classes of the time, and everyone, even the poorest, had the opportunity to feel like the richest. In 1718 James III Stuart came to Fano from England to attend and enjoy the carnival for 10 days and that was a signal of the importance tht the Fano carnival had acquired at the time.
The most important moment of this carnival is the throw: every year, for centuries, sweets and chocolates are thrown to the crowd. There are tons and tons of sweets and chocolates that every year are thrown from the floats towards the people celebrating.
