A mountain town with a very long history: in Aosta you can find a large number of Roman remainings; its local fair “Fiera di Sant’Orso” is considered 1023 years old, starting from year 1000 … more or less!
Every year artists and artisans from the Aosta Valley exhibit their manifactures at the Sant’Orso fair, along the streets of the center of Aosta. In the Middle Ages the fair took place in the village of Aosta, in the area near the Collegiate Church which bears the name of Sant’Orso. The legendary says that it all began right in front of the church where the Saint, who lived before the 9th century, distributed clothing and “sabots”, typical wooden shoes still presented at the fair today, to the poor.
Now the entire city center is involved in the event, inside and alongside the Roman city walls.
